After WW2, my parents looked for a safe place, one where they could work and have a family. My parents were immigrants and refugees. The countries that took them in, Australia and then England, saved their lives. The kindness of strangers gave them jobs. My parents owned nothing and spoke no English but they found their way to another country not knowing what to expect, only hoping for something better than what they had left. Did they have courage? I’m sure of it. But they also had something else: a desperation unknown to those who have never been pushed out of, or rejected from the world they know. – Monique
