In 2004 we went to China. From there we took a 31-hour train ride from Beijing to Mongolia, arriving in the capital Ulaanbaatar where we were picked up by the owners of the only youth hostel in town. The train ride was an experience in itself. We were fortunate to share our cabin with a Mongolian couple who periodically traveled to China to make purchases for their store and they became our tour guides when we arrived, taking us for drives and to see places of interest. They couldn’t speak any english but they had a lovely son – he and Blane really took to each other – and he was learning some english in school. We fell in love with this country, it’s landscapes, it’s people, but not its food – Mongolian Hot Pot was nowhere to be found in Mongolia!
